Although this scenario may seem like something out of a science fiction movie, the category of these articles is, by definition, fantastical, so it wouldn't be complete without it... Especially after the recent discussions in the U.S. Congress, I think a piece like this is worth exploring.
Imagine an alien civilization capable of traveling vast distances. This would mean, first, they have incredible technology, and second, they have a different physiology/life expectancy from humans.
For them to engage in space travel, it’s likely that they wouldn't come just to say "hello" and leave. It would be for exploration, the use of resources, or even colonization of the planet they reach.
Think of them like the Spanish conquistadors who arrived in Latin America with gunpowder weapons, ships, and technology, while the indigenous people were still practicing human sacrifices and using bows... Of course, if the aliens manage to reach us, the difference would be even more chaotic. It would be like you leaving your city, heading to the countryside, buying a plot of land from a higher authority, bringing bulldozers, and digging to build your vacation home. You might encounter some societies of ants, worms, or beetles in the soil of your plot, but that's about it... You wouldn't care what happens to their nest once you build your new holiday villa. And the other scenario is that they might fear us, like how we might kill a snake or a spider if we come across one in the forest, simply because we got scared!
We are, for the sake of this scenario, beyond the discussion of the existence or non-existence of aliens (see here) and simply imagine that we are so unlucky that they found us and came! Let’s see what might happen:
They could possess technologies beyond our imagination, such as:
Energy Weapons: Cutting-edge lasers or electromagnetic weapons could obliterate entire cities without any physical presence or environmental destruction.
Nanobots: Microscopic robots that could infiltrate our ecosystems or organisms, causing the collapse of Earth’s biological systems.
Geological Interference: By using devices that control gravity, they could trigger earthquakes or move oceans.
A possible example, based on Kardashev's theory (see future article), is for civilizations (see future article). Type III civilizations (complete control of the galaxy) could harness energy from entire stars, making them practically invincible to us.
So how would the invasion take place? Ultimately, it would depend on their objective. If they wanted to exterminate humanity, the most likely methods would be:
Biological Warfare: Alien microorganisms could attack our immune system. Similarly, they could spread epidemics using genetically modified viruses.
Electronic Attacks: Humanity is completely dependent on technology. With the collapse of the internet and electrical systems, chaos would be inevitable. They could strike there.
Psychological Warfare: Using technologies to control thoughts or spread misinformation, they could lead us into internal conflicts, ultimately causing us to destroy ourselves, while they appear as peacekeepers, allowing us to surrender with our hands down.
Faced with such an advanced enemy, the chances are slim. However, there are some measures we could take:
Energy Shields: If we manage to develop technologies to repel energy weapons, we might have a chance. Unfortunately, we are still far from that.
Hiding and Resistance: Shelters deep within the Earth or in hard-to-reach places could save part of the population. Could this have already happened in Earth's past?
Negotiations: If the aliens are intelligent, relatively friendly, and we find a way to communicate, there might be room for negotiation.
In the vast darkness of the universe, the possibilities are endless. Whether the aliens are watching us, or silently preparing their attack, humanity will continue to look up, with hope and curiosity, seeking the light of tomorrow. And if they come, rest assured of one thing: we will NOT be ready.
